- Purdue Bells Director
Description
The Purdue Bells Director is responsible for providing musical arrangements and leadership for the Purdue Bells ensemble and specialty groups. Works with departmental leadership on both short-term and long-term educational goals and priorities. Mentors students and coaches on proper technique and best practices. Manages ensemble performance and rehearsal calendars and selects ensemble repertoire to curate a performance season that meets departmental goals and objectives. Serves as primary point of contact for ensemble recruitment and prospective student interactions. Serves as mentor and leader for ensemble student leadership. Participates in alumni and donor relations activities and special projects as needed. Manages administrative aspects of the position, ensemble, and student leadership. Participates in departmental meetings and strategic planning. Must work on campus for two rehearsals per week (Tuesday and Thursday 1:30pm – 2:45pm) with some additional office hours on those days. Must attend bi-weekly staff meetings and 1-on-1 meetings with Director of PMO.
Requirements
75% Musical Direction
- Direct ensemble rehearsals and performances, providing coaching on proper techniques and best practices
- Select and/or arrange ensemble repertoire and prepare concert literature
- Identify and communicate with clinicians, musicians, teachers and technical directors to provide innovative learning opportunities for the Purdue Bells
- Proactively assist with planning performance and travel opportunities for ensemble
- Proactively assist with planning ensemble participation in special performances, such as the Purdue Christmas Show
20% Administrative Program Support
- Manage administrative aspects of the position, ensemble, and student leadership
- Assist departmental leadership on both short-term and long-term educational goals and priorities
- Manage ensemble rehearsal and performance calendars and curate a performance season that meets departmental educational goals and objectives
- Manage guest clinicians for ensemble
- Mentor ensemble student leadership
- Participate in alumni and donor relations activities
- Coordinate recruitment and facilitate interactions with prospective students for ensemble
5% Miscellaneous
- Other duties and special projects as assigned by the Director of PMO
Skills:
- Demonstrated proficiency directing handbell ensembles
- Advanced knowledge of bells instruments and voicings
- High level of communication skills necessary
- Ability to handle multiple/varied tasks and meet deadlines as needed
- Ability to work with external constituents and maintain positive professional relationships with musical and administrative colleagues
- Must be able to travel and be available for weekend and evening engagements

- Preferred: Familiarity with music writing software such as Dorico or Sibelius
