Assistant Professor, Elementary Teacher Education
UH Hilo, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, position number 0086541, tenure-track, full-time, general funds, nine-month appointment to begin approximately August 2027, pending position clearance and availability of funding.
The UH Hilo School of Education serves as a resource to area educators teaching in a culturally rich and diverse setting and conducts as well as guides action research to expand knowledge of teaching and learning, providing high quality, integrated, inquiry-and-place-based undergraduate and graduate programs.
We are looking to fill a full-time, tenure-track position, which will provide instruction across multiple programs as well as engaging in partnerships with schools, education agencies, out-of-school-time (OST) programs, and the Hawaii Department of Education. This work requires a deep understanding of issues related to elementary education, literacy development, education in rural settings, place-based education, education in the Pacific, and education in formal and informal environments.
Requirements
Duties: Teach undergraduate and graduate campus-based and distance learning courses in teacher education, with an emphasis in elementary teacher preparation for general education teachers and other areas as needed and assigned. Advise undergraduate and graduate students. Supervise and support teacher candidates in schools. Engage in curriculum development, program assessment, and accreditation. Engage in scholarly work and publication. Perform service to the institution and discipline. Engage in partnerships with schools and other community partners, education agencies, out-of-school-time (OST) programs, and the Hawaii Department of Education.
Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. or Ed.D. at the time of appointment. A minimum of three years working in K-6 education settings. Specialization in an area associated with literacy development or a related field. Demonstrated ability to teach courses to prepare elementary teachers. Evidence of the ability to establish a productive research agenda or publications
Desirable Qualifications: Evidence of: Successful experience working in Hawaii K-6 school systems or other school systems with students from diverse backgrounds. Ability to teach students at the undergraduate and graduate level. Effective teaching on the development of reading and writing to students with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in classroom settings. Experience with: School accreditation or program evaluation. Education in Hawaii. Teaching or working with rural schools. Place-based education.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
