Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director of Special Education provides leadership and oversight to ensure high-quality
services and full compliance with state and federal regulations for students with disabilities. This role
supports the daily operations of special education programs, supervises staff, and promotes inclusive,
student-centered practices across the district.
The Assistant Director serves as a key liaison between families, schools, and the district, fostering strong
partnerships and clear communication. Responsibilities include guiding and supporting IEP processes,
supervising and developing special education staff, and assists the Director in budget planning to ensure
effective and equitable service delivery for all students.
Function:
Provide knowledge of federal and state education statutes and regulations, educational delivery models.
Relationship:
Reports directly to the Director of Special Education
Qualifications:
1. Education: Master’s degree in special education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
2. Certification: Valid Washington State Administrator certificate with Principal or Program
Administrator endorsement.
3. Experience: Prior successful administrative experience as an assistant principal or principal
preferred. Minimum of five years of successful experience in special education, with leadership or
administrative experience preferred.
4. Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, WA special education regulations, and IEP
development.
5. Skills: Demonstrated ability to work with people in a leadership capacity. Excellent written and oral
communication skills.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of special programs statutes and regulations and
demonstrate successful experience and competencies to:
6. Compliance & Legal:
Ensures adherence to all federal, state, and district regulations governing special education,
Section 504, and other special programs.
Overseas Individualized Education Program (IEP) compliance, including timelines, procedural
safeguards, and due process.
2. Program Leadership & Staff Supervision:
Provide oversight of special education services preschool-age 22, including developmental
preschool, Child Find, and transition programs.
Supervises and evaluates special education certificated and classified staff (e.g., paraeducators,
ESA’s, TOSA’s, etc.).
Supervise and coordinate district special education programs.
Provide ongoing evaluation of existing programs and recommend necessary changes.
3. Instructional Leadership:
Provides leadership in curriculum development, assessment, and implementation of
evidence-based instructional strategies.
Collaborate with schools to implement best practices for student inclusion and behavior
intervention.
4. IEP & Program Support:
Attends and supports complex IEP meetings.
Participates in student placement decisions and collaborates with schools on least restrictive
environment (LRE) opportunities.
5. Professional Development:
Organizes and conducts training, onboarding, and coaching for special education employees.
6. Communication & Collaboration:
Acts as a liaison between families, school district staff, and community agencies to facilitate
productive partnerships.
Serve as a liaison, assisting in communication with families and resolving disputes.
Facilitate Steering and/or other District Committees.
Facilitate Parent Advisory group meetings.
Coordination with Head Start Early Learning Centers
7. Operational Management:
Assists in managing special education budgets, grants, and data collection systems.
Federal and State reporting.
Recommend policies and programs essential to the needs of students with disabilities.
Recruitment and selection of: Psychologists, SLP, OT, PT and other certificated staff;
administrative clerical and other classified staff.
Support principals in recruitment, selection, and evaluation of teachers and paraprofessional
staff.
Marginal Duties & Responsibilities :
