Prince of Peace Catholic Church and School is seeking a school music teacher and parish children’s music specialist to continue the strong culture of sacred music and music education in our school and parish. This 30-hour position is a joint appointment between our church and K3-8 parish school, which includes half-time responsibilities as the school’s classroom music teacher as well as quarter-time responsibilities as the children’s music specialist for the church’s music program. A motivated candidate wishing to grow the program to a full-time position is welcome. Our ideal candidate is an experienced music teacher who can lead an excellent singing-based curriculum in the classroom, who can translate these foundations into musical excellence in our school and parish children’s choirs, and who has an understanding of (or willingness to learn) the Catholic high liturgical tradition of sacred music in which our parish is steeped.
Job Type: Salaried, 30 hours per week; opportunity for expansion to full-time.
Salary Range: $40,000-$50,000, plus benefits.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in music is required, and a degree in music education or equivalent classroom teaching experience strongly preferred.
Required Skills:
Strong singing ability and excellent singing pedagogy for children
Strong choral conducting skills and experience directing children’s choirs
Sufficient keyboard skills to lead classes and choral rehearsals independently
Facility with music pedagogy systems such as solfege, takadimi, etc.
Excellent understanding of childhood development and age-appropriate musical skill targets
Ability to collaborate closely with parish music staff, classroom teachers, and school staff
Knowledge of and experience teaching Gregorian chant preferred
Responsibilities:
School Music Teaching Responsibilities
Plan and teach classroom music lessons to K3-8 students (16 classes/week)
Direct the Prince of Peace Catholic School Choir, which rehearses weekly and leads the weekly School Mass, in addition to other school events and outreach performances
Oversee the music for the weekly School Mass to reflect the musical tradition of the parish, including training cantors and selecting occasional music
Draft and print worship aids for the weekly School Mass
Direct two annual school-wide (K5-8) performances: an Advent Lessons and Carols and a Spring Concert
Integrate classroom instruments into music lessons, including ukulele and recorder
Parish Children’s Music Responsibilities
Lead and direct the parish children’s choir program, comprising the Primary (1st-2nd grades), Junior (3rd-6th grades), and Youth Choirs (6th-12th grades)
Conduct one or more of the above ensembles in collaboration with the Director of Music (currently director of Primary Choir and assistant director of Youth Choir)
Coach children’s and youth cantors to sing at weekend Masses
Assist with the parish choral library
