The Department of Chemistry at York College of Pennsylvania (YCP), a vibrant, student-centered institution, invites applications for an energetic and engaging full-time tenure-track appointment in chemistry at the rank of assistant professor, beginning August, 2026. The Chemistry Department at YCP includes eight full-time faculty members and a full-time lab manager who together support over 60 undergraduates across four majors (biochemistry, cannabis chemistry, chemistry, and forensic chemistry). The department is in the final stage of attaining approval by the ACS to award certified degrees in chemistry. Each of our chemistry degrees is distinguished for its hands-on experiential learning, small class sizes, and extensive student/faculty interactions. Our faculty are enthusiastic teachers who engage in a variety of instructional models, including the flipped classroom and POGIL. The Chemistry Department is known for engaging students in authentic research, including traditional areas of chemistry as well as green chemistry, computational chemistry, chemical education, and forensic and cannabis chemistry. Nearly all majors participate in independent research mentored by a faculty member. Our active culture of student-initiated research is supported by over $2M in analytical instrumentation including our 500 MHz NMR, ICP-MS, GC-MS, MALDI-TOF MS, XRF, FT-IR (and microscope), Raman, RT-PCR, and a newly acquired LC-MS. The department has strong partnerships with local and national industry collaborators, through the Chemistry Industry Advisory Council (CIAC), which provides opportunities for our students to engage in internships and other collaborative experiences. Many times, these experiences lead to permanent employment after graduation. In general, our graduates are extremely successful in securing employment by the chemical industry, as well as enrolling in programs in pursuit of advanced academic work; about half of our graduates enroll in PhD programs across the country each year. The successful candidate will have undergraduate chemistry teaching experience and a desire to utilize their knowledge and skills in teaching introductory and upper-level chemistry courses, mentoring and advising undergraduates, and conducting research which includes undergraduate students. Primary duties will involve teaching undergraduates in general and/or organic chemistry as well as upper-level electives in chemistry. Secondary responsibilities will include developing new laboratory and research experiences for students in the area of chemical expertise of the successful candidate, with preference being given to candidates with experience in polymer chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, and/or cannabis chemistry.
Requirements
An earned Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field is preferred; ABD will be considered. The candidate will preferably have training in a specific sub-discipline that can support instruction and undergraduate research in polymer chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, and/or cannabis chemistry. Preferred candidates will demonstrate a minimum of: two years of successful experience teaching undergraduate chemistry courses (inclusive of graduate teaching assistantships); a relevant plan for supporting undergraduate research; and a broad knowledge of chemistry. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience maintaining analytical instrumentation. The ideal candidate will possess an ability to communicate effectively, organize collaborative laboratory work, and exhibit excellent interpersonal skills. Candidates invited for on-campus interviews will be expected to deliver a successful teaching demonstration and research presentation to a target audience of current undergraduates and department faculty.
Successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively, organize course materials and laboratory work, work collaboratively with colleagues and students, and exhibit excellent interpersonal skills.
