About this role

The Department of Geography at McGill University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Urban Analytics and Geospatial Data Science, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

We seek an outstanding scholar who combines methodological expertise in geospatial data science with a substantive research focus on cities and urban systems. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work advances methodological innovation in spatial analysis addressing real-world urban challenges, and contributing to broader conversations around sustainable and equitable urban futures.  Within this urban focus areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

     Urban sustainability and resilience

Spatial demography, population dynamics, and migration

     Human mobility, transportation, and accessibility

GeoAI, applied machine learning, and computational spatial analysis

Geoinformatics, urban environmental sensing, and spatiotemporal modeling

Equity, environmental justice, and socio-spatial inequality in cities

The successful candidate is expected to establish a strong, externally funded research program and publish in leading peer-reviewed journals. They will supervise graduate students at the Master’s and PhD levels and contribute actively to the intellectual life of the department. Collaboration across McGill’s interdisciplinary research community is strongly encouraged.

The successful candidate will contribute to core teaching in the Geography curriculum and to graduate training. Undergraduate teaching will support the new BSc major in Geospatial Data Science and the Urban Studies program. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in geospatial data science, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis, and spatial statistics. The candidate will also develop new courses aligned with their expertise.

Key Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a PhD in Geography or a closely related discipline (e.g., geoinformatics, urban studies, planning, computer science, statistics, or a cognate field) by the time of appointment.
  • Applications should be submitted electronically via McGill’s Workday site: Assistant Professor in Geography, Urban Analytics & GeoSpatial Data Science
  • A guide for applicants is available at: Microsoft Word - Workday_Guide for Candidates_Extenal_ENG.docx
