Position Summary:
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of mechanical systems for customer projects from concept through installation. The role focuses heavily on robotics and mobile robotic platforms, including system specification, mechanical design, cost estimation, build support, and field integration.
This position requires strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, hands-on experience with robotics or complex electromechanical systems, and proven ability to translate customer needs into robust, cost-effective solutions.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Design mechanical systems and components for robotics platforms (e.g., 6-axis arms, SCARA, and mobile robots).
- Convert customer requirements into clear specifications, scope, and deliverables.
- Develop 3D models, mechanical drawings, and documentation using SolidWorks; review legacy/2D AutoCAD files as needed.
- Partner with the quoting team to generate accurate scope of work and cost estimates.
- Support system integration—mechanical design, component selection, structural analysis, and tolerance planning.
- Validate performance through prototype testing, troubleshooting, and design refinement.
- Generate and maintain technical documentation (BOMs, assembly instructions, service information, specifications).
- Provide technical guidance to manufacturing, assembly, and field service teams.
- Participate in customer site visits for scoping, installation support, and field issue resolution.
- Track industry advancements in robotics, automation, and materials.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or similar discipline; Master's preferred.
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience in robotics, automation, or complex machinery.
- Expert proficiency in SolidWorks; familiarity with AutoCAD.
- Strong foundation in mechanics, materials, motion systems, and system integration.
- Experience designing systems incorporating sensors, motors, actuators, and related electronics.
- Ability to balance performance, manufacturability, reliability, and cost.
- Working knowledge of controls architecture, motion control, PLCs, or robot programming (preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive work to completion.
- Strong decision-making ability: able to manage risk and align decisions with company priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable interfacing with internal teams and customers.
- Experience managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
Work Environment:
- Office and manufacturing environments.
- Must maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record to operate company vehicles.
- Travel to other RG Group sites and customer facilities as needed.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering; equivalent experience will be considered
- 5+ years of engineering design experience required.
