Primary Duties:
- The Fire Protection Engineer II (FPE II) is an Assistant University Fire Marshal and serves as a legally appointed authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). The FPE II provides guidance and recommendations on fire safety issues to the University Fire Marshal.
- Assumes command of the Office of the Fire Marshal in the absence of the University Fire Marshal. Responsibilities during the University Fire Marshal's absence include: exercising delegated authority for fire code interpretation, inspections, and approvals; responding to time-sensitive fire emergencies, system impairments, or unsafe conditions; ensuring continuity of fire safety operations, inspections, testing schedules, permit programs, and regulatory coordination and reporting; and ordering corrective actions, temporary closures, or occupancy restrictions in accordance with applicable codes and university policy.
- Develops and maintains university programs, policies, and procedures related to fire safety, with the ultimate goal to prevent fire and injury.
- Provide technical expertise and involvement with construction projects to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes, standards, and contract documents, with the responsibility to review conceptual, design, and construction documents, and review fire protection submittals and shop drawings.
- Perform inspection, maintenance, and testing of new and existing fire protection and life safety systems.
- Consult with project managers, architects, engineers, contractors, and university stakeholders regarding fire code compliance issues.
- Survey existing facilities to identify code violations and document findings. Prepare inspection reports, submit work orders, and work with university personnel and contractors to correct safety issues.
- Respond to fire alarm activations and assist with the investigation of fires to determine origin, cause, and what (if any) breakdown in fire protection plans or procedures occurred.
- Oversee contractors that are responsible for the proper inspection, testing, and maintenance of existing fire protection and life safety systems and features. May collaborate with the Department of Operations and Maintenance on ensuring fire protection systems and features.
- Create and provide fire safety training for faculty, staff, and students.
- Maintain working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations related to fire safety and fire protection in the State of Maryland.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering, fire safety or related field.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in fire protection engineering or fire safety.
Supervisory Experience: N/A.
Certification/Licensure: Must obtain and maintain delegation as a Special Assistant State Fire Marshal from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Must obtain and maintain Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI-I) and Plans Examiner I/II certification OR obtain certification within one (1) year of employment. Certified Fire Inspector II (CFI-II) certification preferred.
Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.
Clery act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements.
- Responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions:
- Required to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals or infectious agents are present.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment and a respirator in certain circumstances.
- Required to work in both an office environment and in construction areas.
- Able to climb ladders as required.
- Able to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.
- This position requires off-hours and on-call work including nights and weekends for certain tests and inspections.
Offers of employment may be contingent on applicant obtaining medical clearance by university approved medical staff, and subject to the Trustworthy and Reliability program and requirements for the NRC Trustworthy and Reliability Increased Controls Orders including NRC FBI fingerprint and background check as part of the program.

Hiring Range: $77,000 - $81,000, commensurate with education and experience.
