Description:Job Summary
Obsidian Solutions Group (OSG) is seeking a customer-focused, technically capable Applications Engineer to support quoting, technical intake, and process selection for advanced manufacturing projects at our Fredericksburg, VA facility. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that prototype and small-batch manufacturing work is evaluated accurately, communicated clearly, and transitioned smoothly into production.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing team at a time of expansion. As part of our Advanced Manufacturing group, you will take ownership of customer engagement, quoting, and job setup while also gaining exposure to a broad range of workflows, including additive manufacturing, urethane casting, finishing, and quality processes. The role offers meaningful opportunities for growth in areas such as R&D support, workflow development, or future movement toward production management or technical leadership as our operations evolve.
Specific Responsibilities
- Customer Engagement & Quoting
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for customer inquiries, quote requests, and general questions.
- Review customer models, drawings, and specifications to assess manufacturability.
- Recommend materials, manufacturing processes, and finishing options based on customer needs.
- Generate accurate quotes using established tools and workflows.
- Communicate lead times, technical considerations, and project expectations clearly to customers.
- Follow up on outstanding quotes and support successful project conversions.
- Job Setup & Production Coordination
- Create and maintain organized job folders and customer documentation.
- Translate customer requirements into clear production instructions for technicians, mold makers, and finishers.
- Coordinate with the production team to align job priorities, deadlines, and resource availability.
- Track project progress and update customers as needed throughout the build cycle.
- Ensure all customer requirements are captured accurately and communicated to the appropriate teams.
- Technical Support
- Perform light CAD edits or preparations for manufacturability when needed.
- Assist with basic file preparation for additive manufacturing or molding workflows.
- Support engineering reviews, DFM considerations, and technical discussions with customers.
- Contribute to internal documentation efforts, including SOPs, job instructions, or process updates.
- Continuous Improvement & Cross-Functional Support
- Participate in workflow evaluations and recommend process improvements within quoting, intake, or job setup.
- Support internal R&D builds or prototyping efforts when appropriate.
- Collaborate with production and quality staff to improve clarity, efficiency, and communication across the facility.
- Assist with light administrative tasks related to quote tracking, job creation, or customer updates.
- Experience in additive manufacturing, manufacturing support, prototyping, or a related technical field.
- Ability to interpret CAD models, drawings, and basic GD&T.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to customers.
- Familiarity with SLA, FDM, or urethane casting processes.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, maintain organized records, and follow structured workflows.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, hands-on production environment.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in customer communication and job setup.
- Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- On-site role in a manufacturing and R&D facility.
- Requires working near machinery, tools, and production materials.
- Must be comfortable navigating shop environments and performing minor hands-on tasks.
- Occasional support for demonstrations, testing, or evaluation events may be required.
Travel Requirements
- Limited travel (<15%) to support customer engagements, demonstrations, or validation activities
